FAQS

Read through some frequently asked questions.

  • WHY WAX IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Waxing is one of the best ways to temporarily remove unwanted hair.  It is more effective than shaving because it removes hair from the roots, not just from the skin’s surface.  Results are smoother and last longer than shaving. With regular maintenance, results can lead to permanency.  Waxing is not just for women, it's for anyone who wants to be hair-free and smooth. Male waxing is not only common, but women love it! Don’t feel embarrassed if you want to get smooth so that you can achieve that flawless, beautiful skin.

  • WHAT AREAS OF THE BODY CAN BE WAXED?

Waxing can be done on almost any part of the body.  The most popular areas for women are eyebrows, underarms, Bikini/Brazilian, and legs; For men chest and back are the most popular.  However, male grooming is becoming more prominent, and has increased the popularity of eyebrow waxing and ‘Man-zilians’.

  • HOW LONG SHOULD MY HAIR BE AFTER SHAVING BEFORE I COME IN FOR A WAX SERVICE?

Yes do grow your bush a bit so that we have enough to do proper waxscaping with. Some people resort to trimming before going to the salon. We advise against this practice as you may trim the hair too short which may result in all the hairs not effectively being pulled out by the wax. We recommend 1/4 inch, which is approximately 2-3 weeks after shaving (depending on how fast your hair grows). Keep in mind you don’t need it very long either. So don’t feel like you have to wait too long to come and see us.

  • WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR MY FIRST WAX?

It's best to be well hydrated, and use gentle exfoliation several days before your first appointment. Especially the day of or night before your wax treatment. If your skin is dehydrated, it tends to hold onto the hair a little bit more, that can result in breakage rather than complete removal from the root. Exfoliation will remove all of your dead skin cells, allowing the wax to fully adhere to the hair.

Feel confident in knowing all of our waxers are licensed estheticians. Don't forget to breathe & relax! The more tense you are, the more pain you may experience. You can take ibuprofen 45 minutes before your appointment, and refraining from coffee and caffeine is always a good idea as well. Remember if you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to call and ask the Pure Wax staff, we are here to make your experience as comfortable & relaxing as possible.

  • HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

After a client’s first service, the results can last 3 - 4 weeks depending on the individual’s hair re-growth rate.  In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. With regular maintenance, results can last up to 5 weeks.

  • CAN I GO TANNING BEFORE OR AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?

Avoid tanning 24-48 hours before being waxed. It’s best not to be in the sun or use a tanning bed for 24-48 hours before AND after your service.  However, airbrush tanning is fine after waxing.  Wear comfortable clothes if it’s your first time, this prevents irritation to the recently waxed area.

  • WILL THE HAIR GROW BACK THICKER?

No. Regular and continued waxing usually results in sparser and finer hair re-growth.

  • THE LAST TIME I WAS WAXED I GOT A LOT OF BUMPS, WHY?

Immediately after waxing your skin will look even and soft but some hours later, red bumps may start to appear. This is different from ingrown hair since it occurs almost immediately. This is one of the most common side effects that can come with body waxing and Brazilian waxing a few hours after the procedure. For first timers and clients that don't routinely have waxing services may experience inflammation and redness that are usually common when performing since the area affected is extra sensitive.  This is not uncommon for chest/back waxing or if the hair is particularly thick or course. Try taking an anti-histamine half an hour or so before your appointment time and applying hydrocortisone cream after to soothe the skin from any inflammation or redness.

  • ARE THERE ANY HEALTH PRECAUTIONS TO KEEP IN MIND?

Avoid any waxing while on Accutane or Retin A for a minimum of 6-12 months after coming off the medication or consult with your dermatologist prior.

Facial waxing is not recommended for clients currently using Retin A, Renova, Differin or other types of skin thinning acne medications. Please read the label carefully and consult your dermatologist if you are taking any medication or using any topical cream that contains these medications or stop for 7 days prior to your appointment.

  • CAN I GET A WAX DURING PREGNANCY?

Yes of course, Brazilians are very popular amongst pregnant women and you can have them done up until one week before your due date. Our therapists are highly skilled in ensuring your wax is as comfortable and pain free as a possible.

  • WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BIKINI AND BRAZILIAN SERVICES?

A Bikini is the most conservative.  It refers to hair removal from the visible bikini line, approximately 2-3 finger widths on either side of the crease between your bikini region and leg.  We also remove 1-2 finger widths of hair from the top of your bikini line.

A Brazilian refers to hair removal from the entire pubic region, from front to back.  Most women prefer to take it all off, but you have the option to leave a strip at the top of the pubic area.

  • CAN I GET A BRAZILIAN IF I'M ON MY PERIOD?

Yes of course, Please inform your esthetician, just know that you will be more sensitive, and your lady bits and hormones might not be on the same page. Just wear a tampon, you can either cut the string shorter or tuck the string. Either way works for us. Taking an ibuprofen 45 minutes before your appointment can help minimize pain.

  • HOW LONG DOES THE BRAZILIAN SERVICE TAKE?

Your appointment will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Your first time will take the longer, but monthly upkeep is much faster.

  • WHAT ABOUT WAXING AFTERCARE?

Avoid sun exposure, deodorant, highly perfumed lotions and potions, hot showers, tanning sunbeds (for 48 hours), swimming pools, saunas, spas, and strenuous exercise (sweating) for 24 hours. Your pores are open, so you should avoid anything that would irritate the area or encourage bacteria. As smooth and silky as it may feel after your wax, keep hands away from touching freshly waxed skin, as this can also encourage irritation or small pimples. Please avoid wearing tight pants or panties for the next few days.

Lastly... Remember exfoliant’s are your friend:

Exfoliation removes the outer layer to reveal the newer skin beneath. This shedding of the outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean, and allows your hair to grow freely. Wait 48 hours after your wax to exfoliate. For aftercare our salon carries exfoliation scrubs, soaps, & ingrown hair serums that you can choose from in our store. We recommend exfoliating twice a week and applying our ingrown hair serum after exfoliation to reduce ingrowns.
